What are these tubes??

Postby mikelens » Wed Apr 02, 2014 7:40 pm

While doing the cruise filter on my '90 GL 1500; I saw these 2 tubes hanging down with black plastic plugs in the ends. What are they & do they require any attention?

They are the ones to the left of the image.
Thanks to WingAdmin for having a pic of them.

Crankcase breather tubes. Drain if needed.

Anytime you have ridden in the rain or at full throttle for any time, you should check and drain them. I do it every couple of months.

From the owners manual:

Have a rag ready, I got some nasty gunk out of mine the first time I took the caps off.

I just read about these tonight and decided I should empty them out. One had oil in it and the other had some watery crap that had the nastiest odor to it. I was afraid and capped it back off. I didn't know what could be in the bike that smelled that bad. I guess I better get out there and finish draining it. With clothespin on nose... PHEWWWWW.

Does one go to the storage tank? And if so, what is the function of that?

Yup, it can be nasty - a watery, oily mix.

One of the hoses goes to the storage tank. If I remember, the other one runs up to the air box to collect any moisture that condensed up there.

The system routes crankcase emissions (mostly blow-by gases) through the air cleaner and back into the combustion chamber. Condensed crankcase vapors (mostly water, but some condensed oily mist) are accumulated in a crankcase breather storage tank which must be emptied periodically.

Which, in turn is done through the breather tube?!?

I had an oil drip on the left side. I assumed it was the shifter shaft seal. I pulled all necessary tupperware to do the job. Guess what....seal no leak. That's when I saw all the **** in the left drain tube. The tubing was a little stretched and every once in a while a drop of oil would drip just like a worn shaft seal would. I cut a little of the old tube off, put plug back in and ta-daa! I learn as I go.

Why don't they just leave those open and drain naturally?

eberlebike4, I hear what you're saying. Control the mess and keep it off the road... and keep the "daily constitution" where it belongs. LOL
