gear shift indicator lights??

Postby maestro319 » Sun Apr 06, 2014 3:16 pm

I just bought a GL1500 with a heel toe shifter. (I had one on my '86 Aspencade so I am used to them) My question is, "Are there indicator lights for each gear besides R-reverse and OD-over drive???" I can't seem to see any lights on the dash/display that tell when I am in 1st,2nd, 3rd. and 4th. My '86 had a LCD display and had lighted indicators for EACH gear. But not on the 1500??

1500 didn't come with a gear shift indicator but you can buy an aftermake one.

So, do I have to "count" the shifts each time I shift up or down so I know what gear I am in?

Ebay sells shift indicator kits, some are expensive and some are very cheap, I chose cheap.
BUT... it works fairly well. Basically its a small supermagnet you have to attach to the shifter arm and then you have two Hall effect sensors you attach to the heat shield. When I turn on key I get a zero but I know I am in N, shift down you get the 1, next shift up in normal fashion you get each gear shown, 2,3,4,5 but if you attempt to shift higher while in 5 the indicator will actually show a 6 and 7th gear, but if in 5th and the indicator says 5th every gear down displays, but it may show 1 when in neutral, its not super smart but resets itself whenever you start in first, cost me less than $25. I milled a shallow slot in the backside of the shift arm on my GL1500 and epoxied the magnet there so its flush.

There are three different types. Two of them are universal - your type being one of them.

The second type of universal gear shift indicator hooks up to your speedometer and tachometer. It measures the pulses from both, and figures out the different gear ratios your bike has based on the differences between the two. It then uses those measurements to guess what gear you are in.

The third type is the type that actually hooks up to your gear position switch, and reads it directly to figure out what gear you are in. This has to be designed specifically for each bike. Not all bikes have gear position switches, so it only works on specific bikes.

My shift indicator sets on the passenger seat and lets me know to shift at 3k rpm.

Passenger prefers fuel economy huh? I only shift at 3k if I am in a hurry to get to the next gear. Otherwise it's 4k or thereabouts. That is usually in conjunction with a rapped out throttle :D Gotta love the power of the 1500!

I like her spending time with me, but it makes for a boring ride. Back in 2000 she was run over by an 18 wheeler who fell asleep at the wheel. Paranoid don't start to describe things, it's OK to run 80 if I done scare her.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll look into an aftermarket indicator, but I am finding the more I ride the easier it is to figure out what gear I am in. Thanks again.

That's true...but with the wide torque band of the GL1500, I've more than once looked down and realized that I've been in the wrong gear for some time. Riding along the highway at highway speeds in fourth gear, and not even aware of it until I happened to look down at the indicator (and tach!).

As you get to know your bike, you'll get to know what gear you're in just by what your tach is reading at different speeds.

Well here is a nice item but might be more than you want to pay. It has displays for a voltmeter, outside air temp, and gear indicator. It mounts in the panel under the key and replaces the emblem there. You didn't mention which model 1500 you have and this will not fit the 88-89 models.

Thanks for the info. I LIKE this, but...you are correct. It does a cost a few bucks. Now I have to decide if I want to pay that or not. Thanks again.
