1995 Aspencade weird problem

Postby The Wolf » Sun Apr 13, 2014 3:09 pm

My bikes got 56700 miles on it, it's new to me and finally got it running and cleaned up. Nothing serious wrong with it, but I changed air filter all fluids , and after a ride of 1 hour or so came home and was using reverse to back into my garage when it died. I thought it just stalled out but when I tried to restart it, (put it out of reverse, clutch in -nothing. No starter no engine turning over - but I could a relay making contact. Also no neutral light. So I assumed it has to do with Reverse and did all my trouble shooting around that. Checked fuses-starter fuse A Main fuse main fuse B plus all the fuses in fuse compartment-all good. Measured with a meter to be safe. Even swapped ignition relay, and homed em all out to be safe. Last then I checked was the reverse switch homed it out and then removed it and it was working ok. So then I hit start button everything is good again..
Neutral light is on again etc.

Has anyone experienced this? I will try using reverse a bunch just to see if I get same failure but hoping might point in right direction.
Thanks for any help!!

Could you have bumped that on, off kill switch on top of your right handle bar? I know I bumped my a few times the first few times using the reverse, and like you I about went crazy trying to figure it out.

Clean or replace the reverse switch if the mechanical parts are operating it OK.
This happen on my 88 too.
Mine got stuck half way.no reverse,no neutral.
I "operated" the lever several times to get it back working.I fixed it so it would be dependable again.

Ok thanks for the information. I think it was the reverse switch at the lever. I will be taking it out and checking it and either replace it or clean it up.

It does sound like the reverse switch.
Also check the reverse cables are adjusted properly.

Might be a good idea to check your battery and ground connections as well.
