I'm looking at the 1500 starting system schematic...the only thing I see on it that will keep the neutral light from coming on if the bike is in neutral and the bike from starting, is if the reverse lever switch is engaged. If one of the reverse switches is engaged and the other is not, it can cause the symptoms you're seeing. Try putting the bike in and out of reverse a few times and see if it fixes the problem.

A defective neutral switch will cause the light not to come on and prevent you from starting the bike. I would locate the neutral switch on the engine and check it. For most motorcycles (And I assume the goldwing is the same) the neutral switch is switching earth. So turn on the ignition, make sure the neutral light does not come on then take a piece of wire and short the wire from the neutral switch to earth. If the neutral light comes on then your neutral switch is defective. Usually you can't open the switches up to clean them so a replacement is your only option. Again on most motorcycles the neutral switch is on the outside of the engine so this is an easy check. I don't have a 1500 wing so I do not know where the switch is located or if the above is easy to do.. But I would suspect the switch more than anything else.

Not true - I'm looking at the schematic right now, and if the bike is not in neutral (or the neutral switch is defective), you can still start the bike by pulling the clutch lever in AND having the side stand up. So put the bike on the center stand, fully retract the side stand, pull in the clutch, and it should start...unless the reverse switch is engaged.

Try the reverse switch. It happens to me all the time because my bike sits a lot. I just "wiggle" or "jiggle" if you prefer, a few times and all seems well for a while.

I agree, I think that's what it will be.

I had the same problem just a few months ago & like to went NUTZ trying to figure it out. i found that my neutral light wasn't coming on was because my REVERSE handle was completely disengaging the switch. Try wiggling your reverse bar and watch your neutral light....make sure the bike is actually in "neutral" first, tho. Good luck & God Bless....Mike in Texas.
