won't start in gear

Postby adkins » Sat May 15, 2010 9:01 am

My 99 GL1500 SE won't start in gear with clutch activated. Replaced both clutch switches with no luck.

Are you doing it with the kickstand up or down?

After doing a continuity check on the side stand switch and the clutch switch I found them both operational. What I discovered was that when the clutch was activated it wasn't depressing the clutch switch button all the way in. There is no adjustment on the clutch handle, so I had to elongate the screw hole in the switch to allow it to be moved closer to the clutch handle landing plate. Works fine now!

Which part was worn - the plate on the clutch lever, or the switch?

Actually I did not "see" any wear on the clutch handle and the switch was new. I can't say why the two were not mating!

I installed padded (larger) grips on my 1500SE and had the same problem. It turned out to be the new grips were not allowing the clutch handle to come back far enough to ingage the switch.
That was why it HAD to be in neutral to start.

I've come to find the bushing in the lever wears out not allowing properpivot motion for switch activation.

Had the same problem on my 95 put aftermarket grips on, had to pull the clutch handle in harder to make the switch.

Encountered the same problem on my 84 Aspencade after the levers were replaced. I solved the problem by adding a small piece of body molding tape on the clutch lever in way of the clutch microswitch, contact was made and I could then start in gear. As pointed out by wingman, the 1500 will not start or run if in gear and the side kick stand is lowered.
