1990 GL 1500 hard starting

Postby bustedwing » Wed May 07, 2014 5:40 pm

I know this has been hashed before, but not sure if this particular issue has been brought up. First, I have installed a new battery, put it on a slow charge overnight. Hooked it up, hit the starter, and the engine spins fine, but will only start when I let off the button. I have to catch it just right, get it spinning, then let off the starter button, and hope it catches. Somehow ignition is being bypassed while cranking. Help please, and thanks. Bud.

Very common issue with 1500's, and it's caused by a weak battery. The 1500 takes a lot of juice to light up the engine. If the battery is no longer in peak condition, it can't put out enough power to both crank the engine AND provide enough power to create enough spark to start the engine.

As soon as you let off the starter button, the engine is still spinning because of momentum, but the starter is no longer drawing a huge amount of current from the battery. As a result, the spark gets strong again, and the engine starts up.

Put a new, fresh battery in and this problem will go away.

Wing, it's a brand new battery.

Don't know what to tell you. :) Perhaps not a strong battery capable of supplying enough energy? What type of battery is it? What's the CCA capacity?

Brand new sub par batteries are not unheard of have it load tested.

How old are the spark plugs and with what mileage and condition of them.

Then you can get into things like voltage drop in start circuit and starter current draw.

Using your ear to gauge starter spins fine is too subjective.

Well, so far I am on my third battery from this big box store. Every one of them I have slow charged overnight, made sure all connectors were clean and tight. Load testing each one shows weaker battery then the one I was replacing which was 4 years old and not working good enough to start the Wing anymore. This time when I exchange it I'll tell them that I know how much they want for a junk battery, how much does a good one cost?

Don't be afraid to tell the whole story, what store, who is doing the load testing and how, what is a slow charge a maintainer? brand battery, price.

Stop the nonsense and get a 1st rate battery or you will be right back here next year with the same problem.

As Paul Harvey used to say, " the rest of the story" So, to settle any qualms I do have my own battery load tester and did test each of these batteries. But after so many going bad on me it got to where I was doubting myself and my gauges. After battery#4 finally demanded my money back and even asked for mileage because it was 50 miles round trip each battery. They told me don't push it. So took the money and went to the Honda shop and for$2 more bought what I hope will be the last battery I will need for the next few years. I would have saved a lot more than that just in fuel running back and forth.

Update; After 4 unsuccessful tries, finally got the proper battery so have plenty of power. But must have put stress on the starter relays, one decided to quit on me. So for now I have an extra push button " safety" that nobody would know how to start the bike without watching me. $80 for a relay! But it's running!
