My 88 gl1500 needs a new wheel. the original was a 6 bolt spider, can I use the newer wheel with the 5 bolt spider if I change the brake disc (they are different sizes) but is anything else different?

The rear wheels for 1988-89 are basically the same for later model years. In order to make them fit you have to change the damper (spider) and the brake disc, as they are different sizes. If you want to keep the larger disc, I think you need to change the brake caliper support bracket. I tested the wheel before I had the tire installed, and now the bike is back on the ground. and the brakes line up.
