Where there's smoke...

Post by sfrench1958 » Mon May 19, 2014 1:01 pm

With my 98 goldwing on its center stand and running to warm up yesterday prior to a ride I checked the air pressure in the front and rear tires. My girlfriend came out in the garage and stood near the bike pointing toward the lower portion of the fairing on the left side of the bike. As it turned out, she pointing at a steady but not thick stream of smoke obviously coming from the front of the motor.

I turned the bike off and then sniffed the smoke and detected a burning rubber type smell. I did replace the timing belts over the winter and suspect that to be the most logical thing to look at first. There have been around 800 miles put on the bike since changing the belts with no other apparent ill affects.

From the more learned among you...any suggestions other than a look at and potential replacement of the timing belts if they are deemed to be at issue?

I would look at a few things....At the shifting lever, there is a rubber covering..and the exhaust..Is it still in it's proper place.?
Under the front cover, there is a air duct connected to the exhaust shield.....with the cover off,you can inspect for any loose rubber things that are too close to the exhaust....Keep a eye for excessive oil on that side too...from the shifter seal....

Also..under the bike..up front towards the left side...there lives the water pump and a drain hole...see if it's dry...

Take pictures....
