Reverse drive

Postby tvanvran » Thu May 22, 2014 9:09 pm

My reverse drive only works some of the time. With the lever in the reverse position I can hear it try to engage but no motion at first then, after repeated attempts, it will engage but not in a consistent motion, starting then stopping.

Is the "R" light on the dash staying on, or does it flash on and off as the reverse starts and stops?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this post but Memorial Day festivities took up my time. Typical scenario goes like this: pull into my drive and position so I can back into the garage. Drive is a slight downhill slope into the garage which will make things easier. Pull the handle into reverse. The light comes on and stays lit but nothing happens. The motor seems to engage put stays put. I put her into neutral and using foot power back her into the garage where I put her in reverse and everything works well. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

So you can hear the electric motor whir, but the bike doesn't move?

Sometimes the motor whirls and sometimes it does not. Either way it doesn't move. I am going to lube all the components and make sure it is not hanging up somewhere.

More likely it's one of the cables needs to be adjusted. Either the mechanism pulls the gears into meshed position or it doesn't. If a cable has stretched and needs adjustment, it might not be pulling the gears fully into place.

From the service manual:

Place the motorcycle on its center stand.

Check that the ignition switch is OFF. Remove the right front side cover (see page 13-8). Check for smooth operation of the reverse cables. Lubricate the reverse cables, if necessary.

Reverse Engagement Inspection

Check both sides of reverse engagement lever alignment and free play in accordance with the maintenance schedule

Shift the reverse lever into the reverse position. Make sure that the reverse gear is engaged by attempting to turn the rear wheel by hand. It will not turn when the reverse gear is engaged.

Make sure index mark A aligns with the reference mark.

Measure the index mark B free play.

Standard: 2-3 mm (1/16-1/8 in)

If adjustment is necessary, first adjust the index mark A position, then adjust the index mark B free play, as follows:

Loosen lock nut A and turn adjusting nut A so that index mark A aligns with the reference mark. Then tighten lock nut A.

Next, loosen lock nut B and turn adjusting nut B so the index mark B free play is 2-3 mm (1/16-1/8 in). Then tighten lock nut B.

After adjusting the reverse cables, move the reverse lever and shift into reverse. Repeat shifting into reverse several times.

Recheck the lever alignment and free play.

Thank you for this, I just found it and was going to try it. I'll let you know if that was the issue.
