Fuel pump 98 gl15

Postby manewc » Sun May 25, 2014 1:19 pm

just trying to determine if it's time for a new pump or if I've got another problem. I've got a 98 gl15 with about 140k miles. if it sits for more than a couple days I need to hit it with starting fluid to get her up. if I start her every day, fires right up. is there something else that can cause it to lose the prime? don't mind spending the $ for the new pump, just don't want to waste $ either. fuel level, battery charge not a factor. thanks for any advice. mike.

The 1500 needs all the battery power it can get. Have your battery load tested, how old is you battery. With a weaker than normal battery it will spin well put not fire. with stating every day may keep the battery at a better charge. Please report back and let us know what you did to fix it.

Have you checked to see if your carbs are leaking , sounds like you are losing the gas as in drying out and as a side note I would not use starting fluid to start the bike as you could cause some damage to your motor. I have an 85 that does the same thing and I have to give her a couple of twists on the throttle before trying to start her, good luck.

No fuel leakage, I keep it in the garage and would smell the fuel. Also, one twist on the throttle and she's flooded. I'm leaning toward an intermittent fuel pump problem though. Just over two weeks without starting and she fired up like new. Good grief. Just trying to fix it before I sell her. Don't believe in sending a problem down the line but I can't fix what I can't figure out! Thanks for the thoughts though. Mike
