How to wire up a (Back off) brake light flasher.

Postby huntsman47 » Mon Jun 02, 2014 9:35 am

I have recently bought a back off brake light flasher and cannot find which wire to cut in order to splice it into the wiring harness. If anybody has already done this to their bike I sure could use a little help. I am driving a 2000/1500 SE. I do not seem to find a wiring diagram in my Clymer manual to fit my bike? Thanks in advance! :) Oh yes it is a Canadian bike if that matters?

I'll look to be certain but I believe its attached under the seat.the plug has the main brake lamp feed wire. Its cut on the harness side and there's a grounding bolt nearby.
A test probe can identify which is the brake lamp wire.

I've never done one but you need to get to the harness side(before the plug) and cut the green/red wire...verify that all the brake lamps do not light...Attach the flasher unit to the cut wire ends and attach the flasher ground...

Are you saying that this coupling is located under the trunk and that it has to be removed?

Like I mentioned...I've never done one...The book says "with the trunk removed"...
I'd be tempted to look first to see if the harness and wire can be accessed without doing that...
I can get to the harness side on my 1500..The plugs are right at the edge of the trunk lip..I was able to get my compressor plug loose with needle nose pliers...
You only need to get the harness casing split open and expose the wires as they go to the plug...You actually don't need to get to the plug itself...The picture is for location reference..

Which model of the Back Off have you got ... Wig Wag, or the XP?

No need to remove the trunk!! What you are looking for is the C-10 connector, located under the seat on the left side.

I'm using the Back Off XP in Mode 2 to flash all my brake lights, so depending on what model and mode you are running, things could be a bit different in the way you wire you's up

I wired my Backoff Wigwag to the trunk lights. I didn't want to go into the factory wiring harness (just my preference) and so I wired the Wigwag to the wiring harness that I added for my side trunk lights. When I hit the brakes the 2 trunk brake lights wigwag side to side 3 times, then flash together 3 times and then pulse 3 times at intervals while the brake is still applied. I really like it so far. In general it helps a lot and some cagers seem a little mesmerized by it. But I still get the occasional cager thats glued to my back fender. I'm thinking I might add a Kisan spoiler modulator to go along with this (its an easy plug and play addon) Good luck with your install and ride safe!

This thread was very helpful. Thank you!

I installed a Show Chrome Universal Brake Light Modulator that I bought from http://www.cyclemax.com .

I am including a picture that I took about halfway through the job. I hadn't done the heat shrink on the wire connectors or mounted the modulator when I took this picture. My Goldwing is a 1999 SE.
