poor starting

Postby derek750 » Sat Jun 07, 2014 11:55 am

battery is new, alternator is new, the engine turns over slowly and then gets quicker, leave the bike alone for about 5 mins and it will start, all a bit of a mystery to me?
has anybody got any suggestions

Even though you say the battery is new, I would start there. Check the voltage when you attempt to start the bike. If it drops below 12v you may have found the culprit. Good luck!

Right, the first thing to check is how the battery is doing when cranking. Put a volt meter on the battery terminals when the bike is off, then watch what the voltage does when you crank the engine.

What kind of battery did you put in? Did you charge it fully before installing it?

Battery was at fault even though it was only 12weeks old, 10.8 volts was showing before cranking and oddly enough the voltage went up to 12.1 hence bike would start sometimes. Thanks to the guys for replying and putting me in the right direction cheers
