1995 GL1500 stripped brake caliper bolt

Postby SgtCharlie » Sat Jun 14, 2014 11:24 pm

So I was all set to purchase the required bolt when I got back from my Temporary Duty Assignment, but have now discovered that the Honda Direct website I was going to purchase the bolt from has been shut down. DAMNIT MAN! I hate it when that happens.

Well for a little back story, I was trying to get my brakes off to replace them and stripped out one of the Hex bolt head on the right caliper. I found the bolt I needed for like $8 on Honda Direct but for some stupid reason didn't order it right away (because I knew I'd be gone and figured I could order it when I got back). Regardless, I can't order it from there now, so my question to all you GW experts is, "Where else can I find that bolt?"

I have a set of reverse thread drill bits that I'm hoping will do the trick to take the old, stripped bolt out, but I don't want to even attempt it until I have the replacement bolt in hand.

Thanks for all ya'll's help, in advance.

God Bless,

Get a star bit that's a little bit bigger then the hex head and bang it in the head it should grab the the sides of the head and you should be able to get it out. If you have to go to to sears and buy a manual impact driver it's 15 bucks. With the star bit and impact driver it will come right out. Good luck, Dave

I have used cyclemax a bunch of times with great results. http://cyclemax.com/home
I have done so much with so little, I can do anything.

When you say HEX bolt head, do you mean a HEX bolt head or a HEX Socket bolt head?

If it is the hex socket-head brake pad pin bolt that is messed up, it can be drilled out rather easily.

The Pin Hanger Bolt, #23, has a step on it at the base of the threads. The hex socket can be drilled almost dead center due to the way socket head bolts are contured. Just use a drill of the same diameter as the pad pin, which is 6 mm. That is 15/64" if you do not have metric drill bits. The drilling action will separate the threaded end of the bolt from the pin end and it will just unscrew out of the hole usually. I did the same thing to one of my GL1500's a few years ago. The pad pin bolt had been over torqued and locked itself in place. The bolt is Honda Part number 45215-KA3-732 . They cost a little over $6 from http://www.partzilla.com/.
