Electrical Issue!

Postby hondanax1 » Sun May 23, 2010 8:15 pm

I have a 1993 Honda Goldwing Interstate. I will not start. With the ignition switch on, the green neutral light goes out when I push the starter botton. This happens with the on/off switch in either position. I am baffled!

I hate to even ask, but is the battery dead? If not, I'd be looking for a short to ground in the starter switch circuit.

Yes, the battery is good. I checked that first along with all the fuses! I'll follow your suggestion and see what that yields. Thanks!

Well, I solved the problem. After doing all the checks and tracing the starter switch circuit and all that and still could not determine what the problem was, then it dawned on me!!!!! Can someone say, first name "Stu" last name "pid"! STUPID!!!!! After tearing the whole bike down, the issue was sooooooooooooooooooooooooo simple! The bike was up on the center stand so it never dawn on me that the kickstand might be down. Well, that's what it was. The darn kick stand was down which as you know, prevents the starter from engaging! I started not to post this, but just in case someone else might have a "stupid" moment, this post might just save you some frustration. :-)

Thanks anyway! I probably never would have discovered it if I had not taken your suggestion!

I hate when that happens! Well, at least it was nothing serious. It's kind of like accidentally hitting the kill switch, then spending an hour trying to figure out why the bike won't start - not that I've ever done anything like that... ;)

Aw man, I should have clicked into this, because I remember reading about someone who had the exact same problem not just a couple weeks ago. We should start up a "what to check when your bike won't start" list.

I have to ask, why is it that your starter does not engage with the kickstand down? Mine works fine. In fact, every wing I have ever owned (I have never owned an Interstate) would start with the kick stand down as long as it was not in gear. But then, the N light would be out if it was in gear.

Check the #3 relay Pete. Poor connections or a bad relay will cause it.
