Postby FUGLY » Wed Jun 25, 2014 12:55 am

ok guys .i have just noticed a strange tapping /knocking when i apply just front brake only (1990 gl1500se) i have replaced the pads recently and have since done over 2000 miles over a 4 day charity ride ..on way to work today ..had to brake hard and the knocking started ..now happens every time i apply the front brake only have checked callipers and pads but can see nothing out of place ..could this be the anti dive ?i have it on both fork legs ?????

Does the knocking go away when you release the brakes? Does it change when you brake harder compared to when you brake lightly?

yes the harder i brake the louder the noise ...it sounds like something is hitting the rotor (disck) but i have checked and there is nothing out of place ...... bugging me !!!!!!

A couple things to check: First, get the front wheel up in the air so you can spin it (put the bike on its center stand, then put a trolley jack under the engine and gently lift it an inch or so until the front wheel clears the ground. Or get someone "weighty" to sit in the back seat). Check that there is nothing on any of the four disc surfaces - put your finger on each surface in turn and spin the wheel, to check that there are no gouges, cracks, or anything else that is not smooth and even that might be "whacking" the brake pads.

Also, check that nothing else on the wheel is hitting a brake caliper. I know on my GL1500, the last time I put new angled valve stems on when changing the tires, the valve stem was about 1mm longer than the old one. It caused the stem-mounted tire air pressure sensor on the front wheel to whack the caliper once every revolution when the brakes were applied.

If you don't find anything there, time to pull calipers and check that the pads themselves are still in good condition and haven't got any fractured lining surfaces.

well ..had the front right caliper off again last night ..noticed that the caliper slide was catching the disk bolts ..on further investigation notice the TOP caliper mount on the fork .had a kneedle bearing in it that had collapsed ..so removed and replaced with new on ( real bad job to do in situe .i used threaded bar and sockets to push old one out and replace new one in one operation ...) BUT when she was all fully assembled and test rode her she still makes the noise all be it not as loud ..the new pads have done over 2000 miles so should be bedded in im stummped now ..could it be the ANTI DIVE

The anti-dive moves (or should move) only when the brakes are applied, and the caliper pivots slightly.

Is the knocking noise once per wheel revolution, or more than that?

well i stripped the whole front end this weekend ..both callipers off .stripped -rebuilt ..and it still tapps when only the front brake is applied i9 notice a small drizzle of oil from from front right anti dive piston ...but other than that all is correct ...but it still makes the knocking noise
it sounds rotational ..but i cannot see anywhere that is catching ...disk is not dammagesd pads are ok only done 2000 ish miles ...the callipers have a ;ittle play on but float correctly on the mounts ........doesnt happen the the brake is applied when going backwards ..this is doing my head in now ......

Hm, the fact that you're seeing oil from the anti-dive. It's possible that you have some runout in the disc, causing the brakes to grab a bit more at a certain part of the wheel rotation. This could cause the caliper to rotate a bit once per wheel rotation, and if there is an issue with the anti-dive, when the caliper rotates and compresses the anti-dive piston, it could be causing the clicking noise.

Well guys I found it ..and it was so simple ..the TOP HAT spacer on the lower clliper hanger was put in the wrong way rouund ..i put it in flange innermost and it should be flange outermost ..just that 3 mm thickness was enough for the callper hanger to catch the disk bolts ..all sorted and happy now ...thanks for your input ....ride safe  :D

Glad to hear you found it! I spent quite a bit of time tracking down an annoying brake rattle on my GL1500 when I first got it, it feels great to finally find (and fix!) the cause.
