Front Brake pad shim

Postby JMMO » Fri Jun 27, 2014 7:17 am

I pulled my front wheel off, for the 1st time since I bought my '98, to have a new tire installed. while checking the brake pads on each caliper I found something odd. :?: The right calipers outer pad has a shim on the back side, while the left calipers doesn't. I've looked in the manual, and don't find a diagram showing this shim. The bike has 31k miles on it. It had 14k on it when I bought it 2yrs ago, therefore I believe the pads are the originals. What have you guys found when replacing pads? :?: Do new pads come with a shim? I haven't purchased a replacement set yet, but most likely will be replacing them this coming winter.

Thanks for your help.

It is correct. That backing plate is for the right side only.
That's why when many of us that have linked brake systems switch the right pads to the left side must remember to change the backing plate to keep in on the right side!

:D Thanks for the reply. Any ideal why the shim is used for the front only caliper? And because you mention swapping pads from side to side, I'm assuming one side wears faster than the other, if that's correct which side wears the fastest, left (linked with rear), or right (front only)?

Jim that would be the left pads linked with the rear.

Thanks Brian, glad to hear that, because that's what I'm seeing. The left pads are worn more than the right. :)
