91 wing no reverse and no forward gears

Postby AJ Wehnert » Sun Jun 29, 2014 9:13 pm

While on a ride I engaged my reverse, when done I disengaged my reverse and shifted into first and ride about 200 feet. Than my gears were grinding, could not shift into a gear. I can start the bike but when I shift from neutral to 1st there is a loud grinding sound. Also when I' am in neutral and try my reverse my bike will not back up.

Not sure if the starter is stuck, the reverse gears or what...Please help

The starter does not get stuck. What is the history of the bike? First thing to check would be the reverse cable adjustment and linkage.

When you engage reverse, it actually disconnects the transmission output (i.e. clutch) from the driveshaft, and instead connects the starter motor to the driveshaft. It does this using a complicated set of gears on the back of the engine.

It sounds to me like perhaps one of the two cables that connects the reverse lever to the bellcrank on the side of the engine may have broken, so the reverse gears are left in a state of limbo - not connected to the starter, and not connected to the transmission. Instead they're sitting there grinding when you attempt to move the bike.

It's also possible that one of the gears may have broken a tooth and is no longer capable of engaging.

You can check the state of the reverse cables by removing the forward engine cover on the right side of the bike:

You'll see the cables connected to a crank that should be rotating when you move the reverse lever:

If the cables are stretched, you might need to adjust the tension:

From the service manual:

Place the motorcycle on its center stand.

Check that the ignition switch is OFF. Remove the right front side cover (see page 13-8). Check for smooth operation of the reverse cables. Lubricate the reverse cables, if necessary.

Reverse Engagement Inspection

Check both sides of reverse engagement lever alignment and free play in accordance with the maintenance schedule

Shift the reverse lever into the reverse position. Make sure that the reverse gear is engaged by attempting to turn the rear wheel by hand. It will not turn when the reverse gear is engaged.

Make sure index mark A aligns with the reference mark.

Measure the index mark B free play.

Standard: 2-3 mm (1/16-1/8 in)

If adjustment is necessary, first adjust the index mark A position, then adjust the index mark B free play, as follows:

Loosen lock nut A and turn adjusting nut A so that index mark A aligns with the reference mark. Then tighten lock nut A.

Next, loosen lock nut B and turn adjusting nut B so the index mark B free play is 2-3 mm (1/16-1/8 in). Then tighten lock nut B.

After adjusting the reverse cables, move the reverse lever and shift into reverse. Repeat shifting into reverse several times.

Recheck the lever alignment and free play.

Thanks..ya the cables are fine..i took of the starter and the little collar with gear feel out with the starter...Bike starts fine but thought I would pull the starter just in case...I'll check the starter and put it back if good...thinking the smaller piece should have been in the tighter...

This is why I haven't even tried my reverse yet. Didn't want this to happen.

At least now I know how to check for adjustment.

Ya adjustment is easy...but if you use reverse make sure you don't have a passenger on and when you disengage the reverse don't force it...lol
