What brake pads to buy

Postby nitefuzz » Wed Jul 02, 2014 3:01 pm

After looking on the net for brake pads it appears that there are numerous different types out there, some are cheap and some are more expensive. Cost isn't a factor when it comes to new pads, but I don't want to buy a cheap pad at an expensive price................ anyone with some insight and recommendations on what type of pad is the best for the GL1500 would be appreciated. thanks guys

I've tried both EBC (cheap) and OEM Honda (a little more expensive) on my GL1500. They both feel the same in terms of feel, stopping power and fade, however the OEM Honda pads make a LOT less dust and filth on the wheels and calipers, and seem to last longer than the EBC. I suspect the EBC pads might be a bit softer than OEM Honda.

If my experience is anything to go by, stay away from "HH"-rated pads! When I bought my '97 1500SE a few months ago, it had just had brand new pads installed, fluid changed, etc. etc. I noticed that it took a LOT of pressure to get much braking but, being new to the 1500, I figured it was just the nature of the beast. As the weeks went on, I started noticing a groaning noise at very low (walking speed or slower) speeds. This noise kept getting worse, developing into a horrific scraping noise that caused passersby to stare at the bike. No noise on high speed braking, although really pushing hard on the pedal was required to produce noticeable braking.

On removing the rear pads, I noted that they had a very rough contact area, seemed to be as hard as steel, and as rough as a coarse file in the middle of the contact area. They had already started to erode my rear rotor!

I finally bought & installed a set of EBC OEM-equivalent "FA"-rated pads. I now have smooth, strong braking, with much less effort (even in rain), and no noise at all.

Apparently, the HH-rated pads are for extreme-duty (like racing, for example), requiring great heat in the rotor to actually work. Granted, they will probably outlast the rotors...at the cost of replacing very expensive rotors!

For stopping power and longevity you would be hard pressed to find better value than OEM when bought online. I used the cheap $23 EBC pads once and they were garbage for stopping power and wore out quick.
