You are really not going to know if one side of the motor is working a little harder than the other due to a sync drifting out over time. The engine might not feel/sound as smooth when accelerating though.

Whenever carb work is done a sync is part of the job or at tune up time when plugs or filters get changed. If a bike is running poorly it is part of the diagnostic procedure.

It is a maintenance item though and should be checked if it never has been done while in your possession.

I didn't know that carbs drifted out of synch. I thought it was all mechanical differences, but poop, I'm new a this stuff.

Everything going on in the engine from compression, valve train, spark, carb mixtures, mechanical wear of moving parts within carbs and sync linkage will have an effect on gauge readings. Which is why sync gets done last after all other adjustments.

Keep in mind that synchronizing the carbs is a mechanical adjustment to insure the "balance" of the throttle plates at idle.
