Voltage Adjustment?

Post by mraven » Mon Jul 14, 2014 6:22 pm

I recently purchased a 91 1500. The voltage at idle is 11.75 (about 850 rpm), with a weak battery. Does the battery need to be fully charged for an accurate reading? Also, is there an adjustable voltage regulator?

Thanks,
Mark

Not adjustable.
When weak,a battery is drawing a lot of current trying to recharge.this will lower the voltage a bit.Especially at a idle.
I do notice on mine, after cranking and just idling, the battery volts can be as low as 12.2 volts.
At a idle, there not much power coming out of the alternator and the bike is using most of it just to keep it running and all the lights on.
If I "choke" it just a touch and pick up the idle to around 1500 rpm the volts rise pretty quick.
It takes about 15-20 minutes of driving to get the battery volts back up to "normal" at a idle.

My battery will take around 15 amp right after cranking..then start to taper off to 3-4 amp after 15 minutes or so.

Keep an eye on the battery fluid level.Keep it filled.
Lastly where are you measuring the volts.?
I've seen as much as 0.6 volts lower in the accessory wire compared to the battery post.

An accurate reading is dependent on what you are using for a voltmeter. If you are getting 11.75 across the battery while the engine is idling and using a VOM, maybe you need to replace the battery.
Also, is there an adjustable voltage regulator?
The voltage regulator is not adjustable. It is internal to the alternator.

Thanks. I charged the battery and the alternator output came up.
