Exhaust type fumes? I would say it's normal. If you are smelling something else like a heavy fuel or coolant smell then I would look into it for sure. Either of those could be a leaking hose or fuel petcock. I get the same exhaust smell from my bike as well. I think it's the nature of the motor. Of course, some of the more seasoned experts will likely chime in and correct me if I am wrong.
You know, I thought I was wrong once...
but I was mistaken.

I've had my '98 for 2 years now, and I haven't noticed any strong odors while sitting still at idle.

Did you store the bike over winter? If so ...what procedure did you use?
Is the bike running as well as it did in fall?
Have you noticed the enricher (choke) lever sticking in any position?
Any noticeable change in MPG or other performance issues?
No visible wet spots , leaks, or smells when not running?
How is the battery condition? Age?
There are many variables that will need to be addressed - and that starts with your observations .

Diaphrams in the vacuum petcock/fuel shutoff(in front of the fuel filler cap) go bad.Smells like a fuel leak.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

Re: GL1500 GOLDWING 1998
Now I wasn't thinking of anything coming directly off the motor. My comments were directed more to exhaust fumes. Hmmm, if you are getting something off the motor is there a chance a mouse built something on that flat 6 that is burning off? What does it smell like? Just throwing that out there. I know, a bit far fetched. I'll just go back to what I was doing.
