Thread Size Question GL1500 Seat

Postby BullCBX » Wed Jul 30, 2014 2:56 pm

Can somebody confirm the thread size (pitch) for the seat bolts? I currently have one seat mount that is cross-threaded and I need to purchase a metric tap so I can see if I can recover the thread or not. If not, has anyone had success with drilling out and adding an insert?

Take the other bolt to your favourite hardware shop, where they will have a thread tester. They have bolts mounted on a board for testing nuts; and they have nuts on the same board for testing bolts. I would start with the metric threads. Using a non-metric thread (that was close), is usually the cause of the grief that you find yourself in. If you want to 'freshen' up the thread, you could look at a 'reamer' to redo the thread. (But then I am not big on the practical side, so someone else may have a better idea.)

I had that problem on a 1500 one time. I had to "clean up" the threads on one of the rear seat attachment points. It's much easier to repair if you start your tap from the inside and run it through toward the outside of the bike. The threads are probably still good toward the inside of the attachment making it very easy to get the tap started straight. Once you get it started, just run it all the way through until it comes out on the outside, and Bob's Your Uncle!!
I probably didn't do a very good job of explaining this, but hopefully you get the idea.
Good luck!
