1500 Sidestand

Postby hap2 » Tue Aug 19, 2014 12:51 pm

The sidestand on my 1500 is a little loose. How (where mainly) do I tighten it up?

The little 8 mm bolt seems tight when the sidestand is down. Do I need the bike up to tighten it? I'm thinkin probly.

Thank you

Loose how? Fore/aft, or from side to side?

not loose side to side, but out from the bike & back into it. I notice that circular piece of metal (whatever kind of metal it is) is cracked. I could send u a pic if u want.

While I'm talking to u, pretty well all around the sidewall very close to the edge of the rim on both sides of the Elite3 front tire shows cracking going on. It's 3 yrs old & still lots of tread left. It also holds air. People have said it's becuz I use the side stand alot (putting pressure on that tire), & / or weathering, & / or having it on cold concrete floor during winter. I any / all of those are true, why doesn't that back tire show any cracking? I put it on about the same time. Besides, my car sits outside in the sun 10 hrs / day & it doesn't crack. Any idea? I can email u a pic of the tire too if u want.

Thanks

Post a picture of the side stand crack, I'd be interesting in seeing that. If it is the frame bracket (it's steel), it will likely need to be re-welded. In the meantime, you might want to use your center stand.

Use of the side stand won't cause cracking of a tire. Sidewall cracking is generally due to weathering (UV exposure), overheating, or running with too low a pressure or too heavy a load. In any case, I'd probably want to think about replacing it, particularly in that it's the front tire.

My side stand has the same play as yours, I have inspected mine very closely and found no problems with cracks. I have noticed this play on other 1500's also.

Did u c the very blurry picture of where the crack is? If so, were u able to make it out? If not, I can take a better one & send it to u. It's just that I hold down a sheepskin seat cover with a strap that hooks onto the side-stand & goes underneath the left foot rest. Then it hooks on to the right rear brake lever from underneath. All of a sudden, it just seems looser that before.
