trailer hitch wiring harness

Postby wiredgeorge » Thu Aug 21, 2014 1:00 pm

I had my 97 GL1500A triked two years ago and as part of the package, a wiring harness from AddOnAccessories.com was installed but the main lead to the battery was never hooked up. The other day, I purchased a small trailer and connected the positive lead to the battery. This is the wiring harness from AddOn installed on my GL1500:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Goldwing-GL1500 ... 1367013039

There is a relay panel (black box) between hot input and outputs and the relays are triggered by their separate functions... turn signals, brake light and running light. Problem is, when I checked voltage from the end that should be hooked to the trailer, I got -6VDC between ground and running light with pos probe from my multimeter on the running light wire and neg probe on the the ground wire off the harness. I get no voltage on the turn signal wires of brake light wire and ground

I have contacted the original installer, the trike company and the AddOn folks and none have a clue as to why this is happening. I was hoping someone here would have some idea of why this is occuring else I am going to have to remove the tour box (ouch) and pull the whole thing and wire directly. I would take this back to the original installer but they are well over 1000 miles away and the nearest trike brand installer is several hundred miles away... The lights on the trailer are all low-draw LED so there isn't any real reason for the relay that I can think of. Any help/hints would be appreciated. TIA. wg

Incidentally, I have the exact same trailer harness (and it works great) however I bought mine from Cyclemax for almost half the price listed in that eBay listing. :)

I'm curious - do you have any other non-OEM lighting harnessess or lights installed? For instance, the harness that flashes the sides of the trunk lights along with the turn signals?

The only NON OEM lights added are an LED array that I wired in direct off the tail light running light wire. They are mounted under the trunk for added visibillity.

Fortunately, you don't have to remove the entire trunk to get at the wiring responsible for this: Just remove the bottom cover (four screws) under the back of the trunk and then remove the trunk undercover. All the light wiring is exposed, and the connectors that the trailer isolator connects to are right there. I'd pull those connectors and check for bad/dirty connections before anything else.
