Doing my brakes, busted lower caliper bolt while torquing.

Postby Davek80514 » Sun Aug 31, 2014 9:45 pm

I busted lower caliper bolt while torquing. I didn't notice that my torque wrench got turned to "Lock" while using it. Word of warning to remind people to double check the little things.

Also, use good a quality torque wrench. I had a Harbor Freight Torque wrench that ended up in the trash after it caused me to break off a bolt rather than "click" at the proper torque. Never again.

I have a craftsman that's only 30 days old. It was my mistake for not double checking it. :(

I have two Craftsman torque wrenches, a click adjust and a beam. I had purchased 1/4" drive Harbor Freight torque wrench a few months before doing a particular task. I broke the bolt while trying out the wrench for the first time. That was when it let me down. It clicked at the proper torque twice and didn't on the third bolt. I threw it out and went back to my 3/8" and 1/2" drive Craftsman wrenches. Lesson learned.

I tossed my auto click wrench and went back to the wand style torque wrench.

I check my click type wrenches once in a while by coupling them to a beam type wrench. I set it for various torque settings, and make sure the beam type wrench shows the correct value (or very near) when the click type clicks. Better safe than sorry.

Finally got a used brake holder to put the 1500 back on the road.

Well after new brakes all around, new Progressive 416 Duel Air Shocks. The test ride went great! I can't believe the difference in the ride from the new air shocks.

to Progressive for the great air shcoks.

Special thanks to my Brother Norm & my Son for helping get the Wing back on the road.
