CB Issue on my '89 1500

Postby WINGRIDER345 » Tue Sep 02, 2014 2:36 pm

Can any one give me an idea on what's going on with my CB. Lately I can hear the other bikes fine but when I transmit no one can hear me, or some say it's just static. I have changed the mic in my helmet but that didn't help. I tried checking the helmet cords with a friend. We first swapped lower then upper cords. When we changed the upper cords he could hear me ok, but the bike was not running. I swapped the upper cord with my spare helmet and when I started the bike and did a com check he couldn't hear me. :?: :?:

Contact Sierra Electronics http://www.sierra-mc.com/radioservice.html. Some of the early CB radios had a circuit board problem that would render the transmitter inoperative. Give them a call. They will know how to fix it.

If you have access to a Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) meter, then measure what is going out the antenna. It should be as low as possible. Also, check the earth/ground connection to make sure it is clean and shiny - dont just look, take it off and inspect. Then if it is still crappy, send it off to Sierra.

The world is not going to finish today, as it is already tomorrow in Australia and New Zealand, and other islands of foreign nations such as Guam and Samoa.

So you're saying when you changed the upper cord, it worked OK? Was there any point during your testing where your bike was transmitting OK, and others could hear you?

My test went as follows: 1) my partner and I swapped lower cords and he couldn't hear me. 2) we swapped upper cords and he could hear me . during each test the bike was not running. We thought we had found the problem so I switched the upper cords from my regular helmet and my spare helmet (which has only been used four times in three years). When I started up the bike to hit the road he couldn't hear me.

So we know the CB is working OK, because with his upper cord, he could hear you.

I would do two things:

1. Check your upper cord(s) to make sure none of the pins are bent
2. Spray all the cord connectors liberally with a quality contact cleaner (NOT WD-40)

If that has no effect, I would say it's time to buy a new upper cord.
