Is the neutral lamp also on.?
Assume nothing about the battery either.
A volt meter test direct across the battery posts while trying to crank. It should stay above 11 volts.
Headlamps should go off as soon as you push the start button, the rest stay on.
Loose battery contacts, corrosion, cracked dog bone fuse.Just some things to look at.

Hmmm.Im not sure what year they killed the cranking with the kill switch.
I know my 88 will crank with the kill switch in any position.
Better check that.
Just for fun, turn the kill switch to the "off" position and see if it still cranks.
If it does, you haven't found the problem,if it also kills the crank your probably OK.
Let us know please.

For others with this problem, you can try pulling the reverse lever up, then give a good, solid push down. If the reverse lever is up even the slightest bit, it trips a switch that will disable the starter, and the bike will respond the way yours is.

Admin..do you recall when "they" stopped the ability to crank with the kill switch in the off position?
I thought it was late 90's.

I think it was 1997:

It is not reflected correctly in the schematics - they never bothered to update the schematics, so according to my 2000 service manual schematic, it will crank with the kill switch off, even though it won't actually do that.

That's what I was concerned about....By that information, regardless of the kill switch condition, the bike should have cranked over.
I got this feeling that it's might happen again....

Hey Fugly.....ya'll readin this.????
When it does that again,Jiggle the reverse lever up and down... :)

just as an end note ...to eliminate the hour of checking fuses and relays just short the 2 pins on the starter solenoid ..( to the side of the battery) this will let you know if the starter circuits are good ..if it cranks they are fine and fuses and relay are ok if not start checking fuses and relays

My 93 will crank in the off pos. There are some differences in the European models perhaps that is one.
