Manual Download = unwanted programs & problems

Postby Coyote1 » Fri Sep 19, 2014 10:29 pm

I tried to download the manual, from this site, and got nothing but unwanted programs and ads. I spent almost an hour removing about a dozen programs that loaded onto my computer. They kept sending ads, popping up and locking up until I could remove them. I am still getting redirected to pages I don't want.
I would not recommend trying to download manuals.

The further I go the behinder I get.

The downloadables here are all in .pdf and the schematics are .jpg. Nothing there to install unwanted software on your PC. Right click, save as, then open the file with a PDF reader or image viewer. Did you already have a PDF viewer installed or did you install new software to open the PDFs?

I am not a admin, so I can not check, but it is POSSIBLE that the download was hacked, unlikely, but possible. I am sure Wing Admin will check it out when he sees this as he does a GREAT JOB keeping us up and running. . . .

I know I down loaded everything possible for the GL1500 ( all PDFs ) with no issues on my Macbook white unibody. . .

Definitely no hacking going on, and the only files are PDF and image files - no executables that can install anything.

Time to install Malwarebytes. It cleaned a couple of nasty, bothersome PUP programs from my tablet. I was so happy that I purchased the paid edition.

I'd wager the OP clicked on an Adware link at the top of the download page, instead of the image files.

Thank you Google and Adobe for all the annoying junk....Sheesh....
You always should do a custom install and look at what "there" default add-ons are...I usually un-tick everything extra..
Windows,Google and Adobe are the main reason I loaded Linux on mine and search with duckduckgo.com

I use Linux lxle 32 bit and Linux lxle 64 bit....Dual boot...I kept "windows" but rarely use it anymore...

I haven't had a pop up or crash

My issue began when I went to the Free Download on the main page of GDocs. From there I hit download and all Heck broke loose. I used Malwarebytes to help clean out the garbage but it was still a pain and very unexpected. I trusted that GDocs would protect their members from problems like this but I presume their need for advertisers took priority. If I'm wrong I apologize but that is how it appears. Still a great site but now I'm leery.

Sure sounds like you didn't click on the downloadable site files. If you're unhappy with Adchoices or Google ads being on websites, well, I'm not sure what to tell you.
Get your money back.

I run a computer shop, and switched to Chrome a long time ago. It has add-ins for addblock, HTTPS:, disconnect, etc. that will eliminate popups and crapware. Still, be sure you don't have any adware (add-on programs) that come with the download. As mentioned, the software companies make extra revenue when they include these crapware programs. Having been on this site for a little while, I haven't had any problems with anything. Keep up the good work WingAdmin!

I use Chrome with Adblock Plus and have never seen the ads on this site. I disabled it for here after this thread started so I could see what OP was talking about and it was obvious to me that the banner is Google Adsense. I guess if I wanted to install a free .doc to .pdf converter full of adware I might click on it but if I wanted to download a manual I'd go to the downloadable manuals section and get it from there. No offense Coyote, but this happened due to operator error from not being familiar with computers.

As WingAdmin mentioned above, there is no software available for download on this site. All downloads are .pdf or .img files, neither of which can piggy back software. It must have been an accidental click on one of the google ads that enabled a software download for Coyote1. Those Google ad popups keep this site free. If one just ignores them, then there is no difficulty.

I'm sorry if I was misunderstood. I wasn't talking about this site having addon programs. I was talking about software downloads in general.

You guys need to understand that Admin keeps this site open with the ad revenue. If everyone uses adblockers (No reference to downloads) there will be no Goldwingdocs. Just saying..................

I fully second Malwarebytes and the paid edition. I sometimes help some young or elderly who seem to get overloaded with this hijacking stuff. Someone ought to be locked up big time.
