1989 GL1500 Front Fork Leak

Postby rtrostel » Wed Jun 02, 2010 8:23 pm

Front right fork on my 89 is leaking, is this something a shade tree mechanic like my self can rebuild or should I take it to a shop and have a professional do it? What is the best recommended manual for this procedure?

Fork seals are easy enough to work as a DIY...

Haynes manual (clymers and factory) all offer good write-ups (though the seal installtion in the Haynes manual would have you install the seal upside down) -- also -- searching the web will offer some other hand's on pictorial help (several are on the Steve Saunders Goldwing Forum).

The seals can be changed without pulling your springs, but... based on age, it may be well worth your time to pull and clean both tubes -- it'd be a great time to replace the bushings (they are 21 years old after all).

Hi. I just did mine the other day. Went to change tire and noticed fork leak. Any one with little mechanical experience can do it (it is deff. a two person job though to take fork cap on and off!!). But I did make a tool that helped. I took a metric bolt, verses a metric allen wrench on fork cap, welded a nut on the other end. Now take a 1/2" drive ratchet with a socket and you have alot more control over a allen. I was very surprised to find out how little fluid was left in the fork that WASNT leaking!! Deff change both sides of forks while you are there, cheap insurance.
