noise when in neutral

Postby chefkev121 » Sat Sep 27, 2014 7:29 am

Ok so I have a 93 gl1500 70k miles on it and I've noticed over the past month when I'm in neutral there is a grumbling sound. If I pull in the clutch or put It in gear it goes away. Any ideas what's going on ? I regularly change the oil and check it. Otherwise bike runs great. So boy's and girls put on your thinking caps this is my daily rider. I can't afford to break down. Just a shot in the dark i was considering changing my timing belts and i read that the tenstioners make noise before they go. Like i said a shot in the dark. Thanks for your help. Kevin

I'm pretty sure that it's a bearing behind the clutch basket. The good news is that most of the 15 and 1800's have it(can't remember any of the previous Wings having it)and nothing ever really comes of it.My 89 probably had it when I got it and after 60 k it wasn't any worse. My 1800 with approx 35 k on it has the noise.I was a bit worried at first, but after reading numerous threads about this exact condition on a bunch of different forums I don't sweat it anymore.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

No one can diagnose a "noise" from posting on a forum-maybe with a sound sample but, not likely.
Making a noise you haven't heard, then it's time for a visit to the GOOD mechanic of your choice for a check-up!

My 93 does the same thing. Always has. Not the belts or idlers as there would be no change with clutch.

Both my bikes have the same noise in neutral with the clutch out, pull in on the clutch and it is gone. So I don't worry about it. Just food for thought, if its time to change your timing belts, don't put it off, get the new ones and get the job done. Check the idlers while you have it apart.

Yup, my 1500 has always done this as well. It's the nature of the beast.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. I've been using this forum for my wing questions for years. It's a awesome source for tips and help with maintenance and upkeep.
