Front marker lights 3 each side not working well

Postby English Bulldog » Mon Oct 06, 2014 8:06 am

I am having trouble with those small lights. They mount on a bar, 3 per side and are vertical with the fork near the ring of fire. I want to know the part number, and how I can replace the sockets that are worn, the lens covers that are orange are also cracked and old. Can I replace the whole bar on each side? Thanks for your help. Gl1500 1996.

This should not be in the DYI section...as for the lights they are an aftermarket addition, not stock. You would have to determine who the original manufacturer was and go to them for replacement...if they are even available. Otherwise it may be best to remove them.

This is the closest I could find anywhere....

I suspect you are talking about fork lights like the ones on my bike:

The reason I say this is because I had the exact same problem with mine.

They are aftermarket, however I don't know the manufacturer. If I had to guess, I'd say they were Add-On Accessories, but they don't carry anything like that anymore.

The lenses get brittle and crack, not much you can do about that. The main problem is that they are nowhere near water resistant, so the electrical bits inside corrode. I opened mine up and cleaned out the light sockets as best I could. I then bent them shut a bit so they gripped the bulbs a bit better (they take bayonet base bulbs). I also replaced the bulbs with LEDs.

The other problem is that they use their mounting bolts as ground, and this ground can fail as they get dirty. You'll know this is the problem if you rotate them and they come back on.

When mine finally break/crack/die, I'll likely replace them with these:

They can mount directly into the brackets I already have in place for my existing lights.

Cyclemax looks great, and probably easy to wire. I thought it would be impossible to replace easily. Thanks for the info.

Ok, I found the lights for the light bar, three on each side. I found a brand new set still in origional shrink wrap packaging so I bought them. I had an old set on the bike that was worn and cracked, and 2 of the 3 bulbs on each side were still working good. I hooked up the new lights. The new lights only have one wire coming from each light just like I had before. I hooked them up to the existing wire just like I had, and nothing. I checked all of the fuses, the switch is working and lit up, the hot wire is also supplying power to the ring of fire and they are working. I am stumped. Any ideas?

I read the previous comments. I will try to bolt them down for the ground to work better, maybe they will work. Next time, I will buy the lights with 2 wires that are better grounded.

They were not very good due to the spot where they are mounted, that is why they were not around for a long time. To much vibration and hard jarring where they are located. Good luck if you replace them. You might be better off in the long run to just remove them.
