I'm thinking of building a Goldwing maintenance app

Postby Davek80514 » Tue Oct 14, 2014 5:56 pm

I've never built an Android app before but thought I'd try and build a Motorcycle maintenance app for the Goldwings. I have a 1500 but thought about including all models. I want suggestions on what all should be included in the app to make it as helpful as possible. I'm thinking besides standard maintenance like oil, filters, tires, lubing drive shaft, mileage tracker and such. I was thinking of listing the the non-Honda oil filters and other parts that are talked about here.

I'm just starting to look into how to build this app but wanted some advice from the mind hive about what should be included.
Good idea or should I just can the idea?
Please list suggestions..
Thanks..
Dave..

The app ought to be able to list possible sources for motorist aid relevant to your current location. That is to say, if you and your Goldwing got held up here or there, one could use the app to find a close GOLDWING savvy mechanic or transporter...and by "close," I mean relative to where you've broken down or got a flat or whatnot...
Keep the rubber side down.

That is a hell of an idea (the location of a good GW mechanic/help/angel) near where you are broken down.

I would like a schedule of when to do maintenance, and then my entry is when I actually do it. Also how about a list of possible add-on parts that are for the year/make? Those parts that fit really well with minimal issue is really important.

I agree on the local help idea, even if it just included a list of Honda dealers, mom /pop shops, and tow companies that handle motorcycles, searchable by town/city name, NOT by zipcode. . . . I almost NEVER know the zip of a town I am just passing through.

I would also would include the mentioned ideas of a list of NON-HONDA filters, belts, and such. I would also include procedures for various road side repairs, and maybe a generic wiring diagram or two.

You might consider making a few apps, one for each type of Goldwing, I.E. one for the GL1000, GL1100, GL1200, GL1500, and each generation of GL1800. that way folks can download/purchase the one/s that apply to what they own.

Speaking for myself, I would be VERY willing to buy this app if it was available.

Sounds like the GWRRA "Goldbook" in some ways....the back of the Goldbook had names addresses and phone#'s of those who could provide assistance, tools, lodging..etc.

Sounds like a good idea...never tried to build an app....keep us informed!

If it were me, I'd want a parts cross-reference to commercially available parts... that fit without too much modification... to get me out of a jam.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

Another "app" or add on ...
I've been trying to compile data on different bikes problems. Search" has your bike ever leave you stranded"
Just the ones that can leave you stranded mind you.
Then a "roadside" possible repair for the average rider.
Just enough to get the bike moving to a safe place where proper repairs can be done.
Things like ...how to get going if the clutch lever quits(bike specific)
If the throttle cable breaks...headlights go out....battery going dead...etc.

There seems to be a lot of interest in the app. I'm thinking if most of the ideas involved are used what should the app sell for? Do you think $9.95 would be an unreasonable price for an app like this?

I'm not that Tech savey. I also haven't paid anything for any app yet, so I wouldn't be interested.

I would think your small app would be a very large program by the time you add in every model GW, and then started adding in How-to's. I ride with the Gold Book, and my name is in it also.

I would look into a way to mate it up to GWRRA, maybe sell it to them, and they can put the Gold Book live into it. Along with links and things GW related from venders who support the GWRRA, like the hotels who support riders.

I bring a tablet with me when I travel, with my manual on it. That and Wi-Fi so I can get online and ask the forum for help is what I work towards. There is so much information needed, this is why I read the Tech forums, to have an idea of what is wrong, and what to do to get riding again.

My car did break down when I was traveling. Belt broke while in the parking lot of the hotel. Lucky me. Ordered, installed, something was wrong. Went online, and found that the belt pulley was gone. There was one at the shop and I bolted it on, and was running again to go home. Luck I was staying there for 3 days.
