Transmission shifting ?

Postby TourNut » Wed Oct 15, 2014 3:05 pm

I have a '91 , bought new , with only 36K miles now , About a month ago while upshifting , it got a false neutral for a half a second and then gear engaged abruptly , now when shifting from 3rd to 4th , sometimes I will feel a 2 pulse ," ta-tink" shift. unless I give engine and bike time to be in a neutral acceleration state, not increasing or decreasing speed ; then it shifts normally. What the heck ? Always have used good synthetic oil in it and never was one to beat a bike. Is my beautiful bike now ruined at such a low mileage ? I have heard the newer years of the 1500 had upgraded tranny parts . Can those parts fit in a '91 ?

Search " loose shifter".
Its not uncommon to miss a gear if the shifter has excessive end play.
There's even a proven mod for this.
As far as the 3/4.perhaps the shift fork is now worn or bent from a missed shift(sloppy shifter lever)
I would look into the mod before splitting the case open.thats gonna be big bucks.

The shaft coming out , that the shift pedal clamps to , has about a 1/8" play in it . The oil seal hasn't been leaking yet. Does this $109. mod part device that holds the outer shift shaft steady - actually prevent the "cha-chink" dirty shift between 3rd & 4th ?

Obviously I can't guarantee anything,my point is that you already have shifting problems and have just a few choices on the next steps.
Do nothing and live with it or trade off the bike.
Attempt to stabilize it with a mod.
Replace the whole engine or rebuild the trans.

If you feel the shifter is not operating the insides well due to a loose shifter then add the stabilizer and see if it helps. If it does not, then the transmission can be repaired or replaced.
If it must be repaired, the shift stabilizer should still be used.
Will a stabilizer fix a bent fork.?? No..but it may help stabilize from getting worse.
