What is this switch?

Postby CWJ73 » Fri Oct 17, 2014 11:17 pm

Hey all, I need some help trying to figure out what this switch is on my 1990 GL1500SE. Just below the ignition is a small 'hump' which has the front/rear speaker fader dial controller on the left side and a 3 position switch on the top. I have attached a picture so you can see exactly what I am talking about. In the picture the switch is directly below my key ring tag.

I have read the manual and can not find any reference to this switch. I have also played around with it and have not noticed anything happen.

Thanks for you help.

It's probably some previous owners modification of some sort.
On the '92 we also have a 'mystery switch' and once I followed the wires I found a relay...
The relay would click when I switched the mystery switch ..but there were NO wires coming out attached to anything...
They had been cut off... -Strange - ?? I removed it and used the spot to put the driving lights switch instead...
I THINK (?) probably not OEM ...follow the wires and find out where they go.... ;)

I had not even considered that it was after market. I will check it out and see what it leads to. Thanks.

I have a rocker switch on my 92 in the same position. It is for some led lights the PO had installed. Took me awhile to figure it out LOL.

Well I figured out what the switch is for. It controls the lower cornering lights of all things. When I picked up the bike I noticed the cornering lights appeared to not be working. I assumed the bulbs had just burned out. Well it turns out the PO has rewired them to be controlled by a switch like running light and not as cornering lights. When the switch is in the 'left' position the lights are on low. In the 'middle' position the lights are off. When in the 'right' position the light are on high. I am now hoping the PO had upgraded the lights as all the posts I have read about the cornering lights mention they are not intended to be on all the time as they can melt the surrounding plastic. I am working on pulling them a part to see what is going on down there. The more I pull this bike a part the more 'add ons' I am finding.

My driving (cornering) lights on my 2000 are on all the time and I have no melting. That's the way Honda wired them in later years. You need to check what type of bulb is in there.

the bulb pretty much has to be a 1157 light bulb. . . . if it is incandecent, I would swap in a 1157 LDE while you are in there, just a thought.
