am I paranoid or . . . . ?

Postby Uncle Fester » Fri Oct 31, 2014 7:06 pm

Okay, today (6:30am) was COLD outside when I had to take the wife to work. . . went out to start the bike and after a few tries at starting, the battery was toasted ! lol It has been getting weak, not starting until you STOP cranking type of thing when cold, so it was not a huge surprise when it died today.

I got it started by jumping it off my van ( van not running, removed cable AS SOON AS IT CAUGHT ) , took the wife to work andwent to my local Goldwing shop and ordered a battery. He had one on hand, filled it up with "magic water" and put it on the charger saying come back after 12 noon and it will be ready. Went in at 12:30 and got the new battery, swapped it out there.

here is what's weird, after I put the new battery in, ut before I started the bike, with the side panel off the bike, I could hear a very faint hmmm sound would last 3-5 seconds, then stop for about 30 secs, then hmmm again for 3-5 secs, then stop for 30 secs or so. It did this about 10-12 times that I heard then stopped all together.

Am I being paranoid or is something wrong and if so, WHAT ?

Did the noise sound like the video in this thread?

Not exact, but close enough that could be it, and the tank was VERY low, I put 5.3 gallons in it a few mins later. I have never heard that before, but I could just BARELY hear it with the side panel off and my ear down near it. . .
I guess I was just paranoid huh ? LOL

It's always a good thing to listen to your bike and it's various sounds it emits. Tracing those sounds to its source sometimes is difficult. This is where a mechanics stethoscope works wonders. You can play doctor and give the bike a yearly sound checkup.
(Budget minded?) use a long screwdriver and touch various parts while the handle is near your ear.

I'm 99+% positive what you're hearing is the fuel pump running until it reaches full pressure. The only thing strange I read is, it happens several times in several 30 second runs then stops. This might be due to an internal fuel tank leak where the pump needs to re-pressure up. Maybe it's time to do a fuel flow and pressure test? Hate to read you broke down due to fuel pump going out or an internal fuel tank line disconnecting.

I'll have to listen to my 91 longer.

I have filled the tank, and gave her a close listen, and no more noise. . . .
