electrical mystery

Postby trike1975 » Mon Nov 10, 2014 1:14 pm

While sitting at a red light ,my bike just shut down
no lights no nothing!!

checked wires cables had to call for a tow
after a cpl hours I went out and the bike had electric
and started right up.

Might there be a short somewhere??
would appreciate any input.

Check:

- Tightness of battery terminals
- Tightness of bolt fastening ground strap to frame (from battery negative to frame)
- Master fuse (remove it to check, don't just look at it)

If that checks out, start the bike up, then start wiggling the battery cables, see if you can get it to quit again.

To the right of the battery is starter relay "A" and off that is a 30A fuse which controls main ignition. Check the wiring to it in addition to the fuse and fuse holder, they are known to melt down with incorrectly added electrical wiring to run accessories. Give the wiring a wiggle test while engine running to see if it will shut down.
This is what I do

Started bike, found fuse, jiggled all wires, still runs, however
when the bike reaches running temp after shutoff, start button
seems to have a loose connect, as it will start but only after coaxing.
I will pull the shroud today and check grounds to frame.

Thanks all for the help.
