upgrading headlight to Halegon /xenon but not HID's

Postby RBGERSON » Tue Nov 11, 2014 9:50 am

I am having a problem getting the right bulbs..the standard is H$ but there seem to be two different types of H4's regarding the mounting tabs. One type for 88-97 and another for 98-2000 GL 1500's. The difference is the tabs that hold the bulb in place in the socket are closer together on the 98-2000's than the 89-97's. Ie thinking of the light base like a clock the two smaller slots tabs on the 88-97 socket are at about the 10 and o'clock positions; while on the 98-2000's the two tab slots are closer tot eh 11 and 1 o"clock positions adn so are NOT!!! interchangeable.

My question is there some identification number/model/ID that differentiates the two socket tab designs.

I see H4/9003/P43T bulbs. I bought these which don't fit ..for car should have a clue maybe????

Here's what you need:

http://cyclemax.com/inc/sdetail/gl1500_ ... shims/6959

This is a pair of H-4 headlight bulb shims. These laser cut stainless steel shims allow you to use aftermarket H-4 halogen bulbs in your 1998-2000 style GL1500 headlight without any alignment problems. These will be required with the 60/55 Watt bulbs that are sold on this page. The 1988-1997 style headlight does not require these shims to use aftermarket bulbs.

Ah, but the shims are reusable on all future bulbs! :)

Your avatar says you have a '97. I have a '97 SE, and the 9003 bulbs drop right in there. No shims required. Are you sure they don't fit, or has your headlight assembly been upgraded to the 98-2000 style ? As indicated, the shims are for the 98-2000 models. The difference in headlight styles is the lens design. The older style lens has the 'fluted' glass design, where the 98-2000 has a clear lens, as I recall. I use the cheapest Sylvania 9003's in mine. Coming up on 2 years with no issues and plenty of light. Much better than OEM.

I'll look a PO could have switched the headlight but the bulbs I bought definitely don't just drop in and I look at the current bulbs' tabs and the new ones and the tabs are not in the same spots.
