1993 or 1996

Postby golden highway » Fri Nov 28, 2014 10:50 am

I am looking at a 1993 GL 1500 with 43000 miles and a 1996 Gl 1500 with 101,000 miles. They are both very good condition. The is 96 $500.00 more than the 93. Would I be better off with one over the other?

while you can rack up a lot of miles on a Goldwing I would still take one with lower mileage on it

Not sure of the changes from 93 to 96 but probably not much. Are they the same model??..like A/I/SE ..radio/CB/intercom/? If one was a 97 then I'd with 97+ as Honda fixed a transmission issue, 4th gear tends to go out on earlier models. Have the belts been changed on either bike? Maintenance records for one or the other.. verifiable? Compression numbers?? Tire's year and tread depth and new set will cost at least $400 installed. Any add-ons? like lights on the bags, heated grips or seat, fog lights etc.???
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

If they both would be pleasing to you to own, then this is what I would do too:

I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

Need more info to make a choice, but if they were the same models and the same color say then I would go with the 93.Lower factory seat on the 96,but other than that they're virtually the same. Not enough difference to warrant the extra miles and money IMHO.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

Both are Aspencade. Both have maintained records. Both have new tires.

Didn't they correct the transmission problem and add the roller bearings in 1996?

"Finally, the 1995 model year saw some real change. On the surface, new 20th. Anniversary badges, a new chrome screen garnish, slimmer side panels to make it easier for the short legged to get their feet down and some other styling refinements looked like not a lot had changed. But under the surface Honda had managed to make the suspension both lower and stiffer and this improved the handling no end. Also, with some foam shaved from the saddle, the SE and Aspencade were now 40mm lower than before, which made them the same height as the Interstate"

No tranny improvements until 98.From what you've said I'd still go with the 93.

Lower miles on '93 is an advantage and you may avoid the LCD clock issues that have plagued '96 and '97's. Either one should give you years of happiness, good luck!

Are they the same color....likely they are not...
Go with the one that is BLUE -- Chicks Dig Blue !

My 1996 is Sparkling Pearl Blue - only available that one year on the Aspencade.
The only troubles I have had are the clock issue mentioned above...
And a new final drive due to previous owners lack of maintenance.

Proper maintenance is the key to longevity on these wonderful bikes.
