ECU

Have a 95 goldwing 1500SE. I think I may have some problems with the Engine Control Unit. Question is? How to test an ECU to ensure that it is working properly? Thanks.

For the most part there is no actual tests for the ECU other than parts substitution. In the manual there are numerous tests for the problem you are having and the last thing listed is usually to replace the ECU if everything else checks out ok.

What kind of problem are you having???

As stated above, really no "home tests" for an ECU issue, more a process of elimination for other causes or missing signals related to the ECU.

The "Best test" would be to put your suspect ECU into a buddy's bike (same ECU part number) and see if the errors move to his bike. I cautiona against putting a good ECU into a suspect bike, as the ECU failure may have originated on the bike itself and toasting your buddy's ECU is not what friends do.

Thanks for your help.

I followed the shops manual procedures and cleaned the ECM and wiring side connections. Tested wiring side of connection to ECM and found that all met specs. Replaced battery with new one and all seems to be working fine for now. Thanks again.
