Rear shock boot 1500 wing

Postby joeincalif » Wed Dec 24, 2014 10:58 pm

I changed the rear crash bars on my 97 SE today. When I bought the bike the rear bars were all pitted and very bad looking undreneath. You couldn't see it but I knew it was there. Got a nice set from a guy on a forum and mounted them today. I left the panel under the trunk off because Santa is bringing me the wire harness to make the side trunk light flash with the tiurn signals.

But I did notice the rubber boot on the right shock (as you sitting on the bike) was torn.
So how important is it that I change that boot now? What can happen if I don't change it right away. I only bought the bike in November so I'm sure it was torn before I bought the bike.

The boot part # 52611-MN5-003 is not mission critical and is there to protect piston and seal from FOD.

Since it is an easily replaceable item by removing one saddlebag and then shock there is no reason to let it go too long.
This is what I do

Apparently these are starting to go frequently enough that Cyclemax has started to keep them in stock, rather than order them specially:

In any case, you can remove that lower shock bolt (the one that mounts the shock to the swingarm, and pull the bottom of shock to the rear. You can then pull off the old boot and replace it with the new, push the shock back into place and replace the bolt.

I used the Monroe boot on mine when I replaced the rear tire the first time, works fine and I didn't trim the new boot. Just slip it on and use a couple of black cable ties. I picked it up at O'Reileys for around $7.
