is it possble install '85 1200 radio amp into '89 1500 radio

Postby my-89 » Wed Dec 31, 2014 11:50 am

I would like to install an amp into my 1989 1500 GL radio system. A friend and I have tried to install an amp from an electronics store and have run into wire color crossovers and come to a BIG STOP!.....I just learned that 1985 and 1986 1200's had an amp in their radio systems. Is it possible to integrate this amp into my 1989 1500 GL system?...would be nice if it just was a plug into and play!!.........Any help would be most appreciated!!!!

It's possible...as nothing is impossible. But why would you want to? The amplifier in the GL1500 is integrated into the head unit. The best way to add an aftermarket amp would be to install an automotive-style amplifier that has speaker-level inputs, then wire the speaker outputs from the GL1500 head unit into the amp, and then the speakers to the output of the amp.

Alternatively, you can get a speaker-to-line-level converter, use that to convert the speaker level output to line level, and feed that to a standard automotive amp, which then drives the speakers.

thanks for the info......can use all the help I can get....electronics is definitely trying to get me down..........you said "amplifier that has speaker-level inputs, then wire the speaker outputs from the GL1500 head unit into the amp, and then the speakers to the output of the amp. Alternatively, you can get a speaker-to-line-level converter, use that to convert the speaker level output to line level, and feed that to a standard automotive amp, which then drives the speakers."-----that's where I run into the fact that there are only REAR speakers prongs--RR, + and - and RL, + and -........no mention of front speakers.........LOST!!!!!
