California model goldwing

Postby bohdan » Sat Jan 03, 2015 1:18 pm

Greetings, how does one know if they have a California model? I bought my goldwing new in 93 in Indiana and wasn't told I had this model. The reason I think I have this model is because there was a canister that according to the manual needs to be removed to get to the slave unit. Other question, do I need to replace? Mighty obliged

You can tell by the frame numbers. The 1993 year model was :

Interstate NonCalif SC226*
Calif SC227*

Aspencade NonCalif SC220*
Calif SC221*

SE NonCalif SC223*
Calif SC224

There are some other numbers that might also assist in identifying your 1993. So let me know if yours does not fit this model id. The frame numbers are on the sticker that is attached to the frame.

According to my Clymer's, there is no need to replace unless it is cracked or damaged. However, you should check the mountings and the tubes to ensure that they are still functional. The aim of this is to collect petrol/gas fumes when the engine is off, store it in that cassette, and then when going again it empties the cassette's contents into the system so that it is vapourised with exhaust. It should be able to run without it if you disconnect it.

The difference is a carbon canister to capture gas fumes and burn them. No vent in the gas tank cap, and different carbs, I believe.

A California emission bike will have a charcoal canister to which the vent hose from gas cap goes in addition to the extra plumbing and valves from charcoal canister to carburetors.
This is what I do

Next time you check oil look on the frame after removing the 2 covers. There will be a sticker that tells you if it is a calif model or not. Gives tune up info and tire size I believe. Yip, just went and checked. Under the right side cover to the front...
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

I was told Big Blue 1993 1500 Aspencade is California by the seller, frame number confirmed it. Last American owner lived in Daytona Beach before exported.
The day I bought it.

Big Blue 2002 1800 Monarch. Registered in California, 2004 converted to a trike in California at 3,000 miles, 2007 exported with 7,000 miles, I snapped it up in 2012 with under 8,000 miles. I have all the paperwork and receipts, even some small blue US road tax things, well that is what they seem to be.
The day I bought it

Every GoldWing I have owned since my first GL1000 in 1982 have been US imports, and practically everything I have bought for them excluding tyres I have bought from USA. Thank you USA for exporting GoldWings, and your GoldWing accessory shops for shipping to the UK.

Can anyone guess who went as far as to let me buy US shipping only stuff in the USA for my GoldWing, that they did not sell. Let me have it posted to their shop, and they would put it in my pending order box for me. How cool is that.

Thanks guys for the info. Seems I have two places to look on the frame for a California model. Maybe it is . If not, I guess I got the canister as an added bonus. If I understand correctly, this charcoal canister is not on the "non-California" bikes. Would that be a correct statement?

Yep , Just checked the right side it says "this vehicle conforms to USEPA and California Regulations applicable to the 1993 model". Isn't that interesting. I had the bike for 22 years and just now I find out that it appears that I have a "California emission" bike. I guess if I ever wanted to move to California, I guess I would be good. Still will check the serial number once the bike is off the lift. Mighty obliged!

You do not have to have a California Emission bike to bring it into California to be registered as used. It needs to have that certification to be sold as brand new.

True! My 88 is non-CA bike and my 99 is a CA bike. There is not emissions regs for bikes sold used in CA. Only new ones!

No it isn't a problem when moving into the state with your car or MC that does not have the CA emissions equipment. Your car will have to be smog tested, but your MC does not.
