98 GL1500 OD light, Fuel Guage, Temp Guage Not Working

Postby Poohman » Sun Jan 11, 2015 12:42 pm

I was riding this past Saturday and my OD indicator, Fuel Gage and Temp Gage stopped working, as with When I put it in reverse it will not go into reverse and the R indicator light is not on. Checked fuses and all is well and good. What might be my problem? Been a while since I have been on this sit, but sold 85 gl1200 and bought a 1998 GL1500 SE from a retired NY PD guy. Thanks for all the help

May I suggest putting a new fuse in the #8 space labeled 'Tail/Meter/Position' and putting a similar rated relay in the #3 space 'Tail (Main) Relay.
This controls the gauges.
Check to see if the reverse cables are within spec.

All of the items you list above are powered by fuse 8, the Tail/Meter/Position fuse (15 amps) and relay 3, the Tail (Main) relay:

Check the fuse first. If it is not blown, then the relay needs replacement: Replacement relay

Thanks you very much I switched the #3 Relay and turned on the wing and Tah-Dah! It works. Thank you, Thank you, Thank You. Now I will buy a new Relay and replace it. Now for another Question. When I change the Oil, would it be better to use synthetic Oil or just the standard Oil? I heard that the Synthetic is better but not sure. I have 49,000 miles on the 1998 GL1500se and bought it from a retired NYPD Officer and he used regular Oil the last time he changed it.

I believe in changing the oil every 2500 to 3000 miles and change the filter. I used Honda GN4 10W40 and an OEM filter. That was the 'Diet' for my 1500. I have a simple philosophy, oil is cheap/engines are expensive. The bike ran well and I never had any problems with seals leaking. On start up I never had the hydraulic tappets make a sound. My suggestion would be to stick with standard oil. YMMV JMHO
Congrats on the new 2 U Wing.
