unusual noise from front of motor

Postby jdavidsmit » Sat Jan 17, 2015 9:27 am

The week before Christmas we had some good weather after being cold for a week or so. i decided to ride the bike to work in the afternoon, i drive a school bus. any way when i started her up there was a rattling noise coming from the front of the motor, this was first time i had ever heard it.

She is a 1991 1500GL with about 61000 miles. I replaced the timing belts this past spring, tensioners look good did not replace. rode around 4000 miles this summer no problem. other than a fuel delivery issue. changed oil in early December.

Bike had been on center stand about two weeks. oil checked and at proper level, started in neutral, kick stand up, at idle. full choke. time she started the noise started, i shut it right back down and have not started her again.

My question is where to start? water pump, belts tensioners, any thoughts?

The first thing I thought of were belt tensioners. The more I use my stethoscope the more I appreciate it. I do not know much about the 1500 since all I've ever had were four cylinder wings. Don't suppose you could run the engine without the belt cover?

A mechanic's stethoscope should be your first tool for this kind of thing - find out exactly where the noise is coming from.

"IF" you need belt tensioners I have a set that came off my 97'. When I did my belts last year I did the tensioners too, come to find out I didn't need tensioners but I put them on anyway, so now I have these used one's with 28k on them that are smooth and quiet. Cyclemax sell's them for $78. each, "IF" you need tensioners and you don't want to spend the money on new one's, I'll sell these real cheap. I hope your noise is a simple fix, keep us posted on what it turns out to be.

Thanks for the information, tomorrow i will stop by NAPA and pick up a stethoscope and see where it takes me. Think i will pull the timing belt covers off and have a look before i start her up, just in case.

you can tie the hoses and wires back and run it with the belt covers off
