1993 GL1500SE Pouring Fuel

Postby Yagerbomb85 » Thu Jan 22, 2015 11:50 am

I have a 1993 GL1500SE it is pouring fuel every now and then. not all the time and only on the side stand. i have cleaned carbs and installed new jet kits. that did not fix the problem. so i replaced carbs and still have the same problem . checked float levels and they are good. i was wondering if a vacuum problem could cause this issue or if anyone else had the same problem and what they did to resolve it.

You might remove the vacuum operated fuel valve and test it.
No vacuum should stop fuel from flowing through the valve.
Pulling a vacuum should open the valve. It may be sticking open.
I do believe they can be rebuilt too.
Its i front of the gas cap.Youll have to get the top shelter off to get it out(I think).

Then the floats are not shutting off the fuel...sorry,one of the floats or fuel valve is sticking open.

i was also told it had a return to the fuel tank. they said it was controlled by vacuum but i do not know. just asking. now we tested the carbs with a external tank off the unit at different angles and did not have a problem with them leaking prior o install. i am a motorcycle tech but i just know a hole lot about these 1500. i have cleaned hundreds of carbs and like i said we installed all new needles and jets into the carbs. the seats do not look wore or damaged. i just did not know if the vacuum system had more to do with the carbs and fuel flow.

Not to my knowledge.the fuel system is pressure fed from the fuel Pump at about 4 psi.theres no return line.plenty of vacuum lines but none directly related to fuel except the cut off valve. If it pours gas out while running, one carb must be stuck.
A operating float will seal off 4 psi of fuel.
If you could get it to act up,smack the carbs.

it pours out of overflow tubes coming from carbs. i am going to remove the T- connector that ties the two carb drain tubes together to find out which carb is leaking.

I would agree that it is a float/float valve problem but if you are positive of your work quality and correct parts there is another place to look.

Fuel pump failure is not unheard of in the 1500 with normal pressure being 1.5 psi. Due to the cost of the in tank electric pump some will go to an auto parts store and take one off the shelf which looks similar and might be all wrong. Test the fuel pump pressure and if OK than it will be back into the carbs.

Fuel pump runs with engine cranking or running only.

The 2 tubes.on the bottom of the carbs,,??..there just drain tubes..not overflow tubes.
Unless your talking bout the breather tube on the back upper side.

You said that you've replaced the carbs but you're still getting the same fuel drain issue? Only way I see the problem still happening is if the bowl drains were open on your original set of rebuilt carbs and a stuck float on your replacement set. That or there were some carb hoses/vac lines not hooked up correctly on both installations. Did you clean and adjust the replacement carbs also?

Here's a thread with a vid of someone having the same problem as you. http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16578

i think i have found the issue. i am the third tech that has worked on this unit and all previous work was supposedly done before it made it to me. i have tested and it is leaking out of right carb so i dissembled carb and carefully looked at it and found that the needle seat has been replaced but the needle was never replace like it was supposed to be. needle valve has a deep ring so it is not seating properly.

Float height is 8mm with the tang on the arm just barely touching the plunger on the float valve.

When on bench testing,I usually apply 3-4 psi of fuel pressure.I have a 1 gallon tank 6 feet above the carbs...gravity feed....or use a test pump...let it set and then drain the bowls and measure the levels...
Check the pivot pins too..I've seen them bent...binds the float once in a while.

Hey guys im back still have fuel draining. i check fuel flow and it says in the manual it should have a min of 640cc per min. i have 2400cc which to me seems high. i have cleaned carbs again and checked everything but to me it seams like the fuel pressure is to much for the float needles. when i say it is pouring it is comming out at like full fuel pump pressure.

Can you attach a pressure gauge to the fuel line and check the pressure?

I'm curious as to what you found. I am having the same issue. Replaced float valve set as well as a randakk kit but still have fuel pouring out of the bottom tubes. I also replaced the pump with a auto pump when I bought the non-running bike. This is a California model
