FYI on 1995 se neutral light not coming on and starter not working with rear bags off

Postby pootka18 » Fri Feb 13, 2015 11:10 pm

I had looked in my shop manual and thought it said something about a relay that was mounted on the bags that I had removed to replace the tire and service the drive shaft. After the bags were removed I tried to spin the motor over and when I turned the key on and the neutral light did not come on and the starter would not spin. Today I installed the bags and reconnected the three large electrical connectors and everything worked. So if you have an se and you have your bags off you will not be able to start the bike.

I've had my bags on and off many, many times and never had any relay of any kind fastened to them - the only electrical connectors were those for the lights in the bags themselves, and they are certainly not large. Can you describe exactly where these connectors were?

Blue, red, black connectors. Check honda shop manual page 18-28 diode assembly d6 ground neutral indicator & d1 ground starter relay switch. This stays with the rear bags along with the sub frame air compressor, etc.Have you ever started your bike while the rear bags were off ?
Thanks

All the time. :)

You do know that the saddlebags can be removed from the sub frame and is how maintenance work is done leaving the frame in place? Rear wheel, tire, shock, final drive, driveshaft, swing arm, brake, compressor, exhaust work is done with just the bags removed.

When you remove the arse end of the bike and disconnect main wire harness components you are correct it will not work as advertised.
This is what I do

This was the first time to take this bike apart so I opted to pull the whole thing off. I work alone so I used my engine hoist to take it off and store it while making the repairs, was quick remove 2bolts,loosen2 and unhook 6wires. Besides I am a machinist (hardheaded) I like to see how things are put together and enjoy using my new lift.

No wonder I got stumped, you had removed the sub frame assembly LOL, when you said you pulled the bags off the rear, I/we assumed that is what you actually did LOL. Otherwise, when you said

I may well have asked what you meant by "section"

Well at least you have run a good diagnostics on the starter safety and reverse components.
Plus it was entertaining, (perhaps not so much for you) and you sure are getting to know your 1500

If at first you don't succeed, hide the evidence.
