1994 Aspencade. The mute function appears irregularly. Might last a few seconds, maybe days. Mute button does not affect it when it does this, but will function when all's normal. No intercom, no CB installed. ????

The mute and tune switches are switching their associated wires to ground when they are pressed. So if the mute wire is being crushed or pinched somewhere, and being shorted against anything metal on the frame in the process, it will cause the mute function to engage. That's the first place I would look - trace the wire (it's Blue/Black) from the mute switch to the radio, and see if it is being shorted out anywhere along its route.
