What do you hear? Does the reverse light come on? We need some more details on "doesn't work" in order to help you with this complex system.

Thanks but after taking the starter out I can see the idle gear is broken so it's engine out for me. Great

good grief, you gotta pull the engine. Does this idler gear affect everyday running, say on a 2 wheeler?????? What do you think caused it to break? Good luck and keep us informed on everything you run across on this issue. I have an SE and don't even know how the reverse works cause I never used it.....but a trike would be mandatory. well, if you got a warm place to work it's something to do in the winter.
Scott, you've done alot of internal work. If you had to tear a 1988 bike down for this repair is there any other mechanical things he should be looking to replace or look for wear?????? seems like a good time to do an overhaul. I don't really know how deep you got to get into the engine......some enlightenment would be nice. for all of us.

It is a pain as the trike is sold to a guy who has just had two new knees so reverse is definitely a must.
Plus there's a big lump of cog rattling around in there somewhere which I guess will only do more harm than good.

Does that cog thunp only happen in reverse or going forward too. Anybody know what woulda caused something like that to happen. Heck if it's rolling around in there, other damage may have already been done. Good luck and keep us updated on this one.
