rear side covers

Postby peetheteach » Wed Jun 16, 2010 2:06 pm

Sorry if this seems a banal question to long time owners, but can someone tell me how to take the rear side covers off without causing damage to them. It is a new bike to me and the manual just says remove them.

The manual is right. They have plastic pegs pushed into rubber grommets. To remove, just pull straight off, they will pop right off. To reinstall, position, and push the pegs into position in the grommets.

this is where having some fingernails really helps.
I start with the front upper portion of the cover... pull it straight out.
Then the lower forward area.... again straight out.

Then gently pry out the 2 rear tabs... being very careful not to pull the front of the cover out more than maybe 2" and then pull the cover off with a hand on the rear to stabilize it.

Doing it the first time, it helps to have the seat off. This way you can put your hand inside the rear section of the cover and watch the tabs as you gently pry them out.

It'd be a good idea to replace the grommets that the tabs fit into. I use some spit to initially lube the tabs when going back together... in reverse order. Rear first,... then the 2 front tabs.
