Another carb question

Postby Idrc » Sun Mar 08, 2015 6:42 pm

I have a 1988 GL1500.
The problem is sometimes the bike is hard to start, like it's flooded. It runs rough and takes a while to clear out.
The problem is intermitting.
The carbs have been overhauled and the accelerator pump mod has been done.
I took the breather assembly off, cranked the engine and brought it up to temp.
Shut if off and waited, after about 2 minutes I noticed the accelerator pump tubes started dropping fuel down the throats.
How can this be acuring, bowl vents are clear, vaccum petcock is ok.

Any ideas?
Is there a check valve in the top cap?

Possible float needles not seating properly. Are you getting any gas in your crankcase?

No fuel in the crankcase.
But the needle and seats are aftermarket.
After close inspection with a magnifying glass I found the wear line on the rubber part of the needle was not even.
So I put the original Honda needle and seats back in and reset the float levels.
I also found a vaccum leak.
Brought the engine up to temp and sinced the carbs and set the low speed needles.
The bike runs perfect and idles smooth, like it should.
While I had it all apart I also removed the acc tube check valve. Made sure it was clean.
It still drips after sitting a few minutes.
I don't think I can stop it. The fuel is being heated and it's just over coming the check valve.
I think the main problem I had with the bike was the needle and seats. It had to not be seating all the way sometimes.
I'll put some miles on the bike and see how it works out.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions!

My bike does this too, always has, the hard starting like it's flooded, after coming up to temp then sitting for a bit. Takes more than a couple of minutes, though. More like 10 or 15. But if I let it sit for a couple of hours after running, it starts immediately. i replaced both the seats and needles with OEM when I rebuilt the carbs last year. I've never noticed the acc pump squirters leaking, though. I normally have the bike together when this happens. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I'll check with the filter cover off .

Let us know what you find, this might be a common problem with the carbs.

The only other way I would know to resolve the problem would be to drill a very small bypass hole from the bowl to the acc pump chamber. It would have to be extreamly small, and would be very difficult to do.
I know I mine it originally had two bypass ports, maybe that was what they were for.

I haven't gotten a chance to take the air box cover off yet but as soon as I do I'll post an update.
